BOSS – BOAT OPERATOR AND SEAMANSHIP SCHOOL has Island-Wide presence offering its courses in pre-established Training Areas on the North, East, South and West coasts of Puerto Rico while leaving to the water from local ramps and marinas in each area.

The Basic Course will be offered by demand on a once a month on a rotation basis at each Training Area.

Each basic course will consist of 12 hours of training. The OTC or on the classroom component of the course will cover boat operation theory, review of best practices and testing. Simulation and discussion of the skills to be learned and performed on the water will also be discussed.

Each course will accept up to 20 students per week for 4 hours of classroom discussions; while the OTW or on the water component will divide the class in two groups. Each group will consist of 5 to 10 students per day on an 8 hour skill demonstration session for two consecutive days per week. Number of students per boat per course will not exceed six.

Safe Powerboat Handling

US Coast Guard & NASBLA ApprovedThis 16-hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boathandling skills on actual boats. The US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved this course.

These national and state approvals call for the course to include a total of six to eight hours of classroom sessions covering required education topics.

Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling

This 8- to 12-hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who has taken a classroom boating course but needs experience to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boathandling skills. Students will be expected to study the course materials at home to challenge and pass a written exam covering equipment requirements, rules of the road, aids to navigations, preparation, environment regulations, safety and emergencies.

This course focuses on hands-on application of all skills, consequently it is NOT approved by the US Coast Guard or the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) as meeting requirements for a state boating safety education certificate.

Safety & Rescue Boat Handling

This 8-hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who will be using powerboats to perform safety and rescue functions. It is designed for regatta personnel, marine patrols, police and fire rescue personnel, park rangers, and on-the-water sailing instructors and coaches.
